The Mustang fighter aircraft, officially known as the P-51 Mustang, became one of WWII’s most effective and celebrated warplanes.
Developed by North American Aviation in 1940, it was originally designed for the British Royal Air Force.
The Rolls-Royce Merlin engine gave the Mustang superior speed, altitude, and long-range capabilities.
Primarily used as a long-range bomber escort, it drastically reduced Allied bomber losses.
Top speed reached around 437 mph with a combat range of over 1,600 miles.
Equipped with six .50 caliber Browning M2 machine guns and capable of carrying bombs or rockets.
Its agility and firepower made it a nightmare for enemy fighters, especially the Luftwaffe.
Played a key role in gaining Allied air superiority over Europe in 1944–45.
Several models were produced, including the P-51B, P-51D, and P-51K, each with improvements.
The Mustang continued serving in the Korean War and various air forces worldwide.
