Say Hello To Lake Baikal – A Genuine Natural Wonder!
Located in Siberia, Russia, Lake Baikal is the oldest and deepest freshwater lake in the world.
Why Is It So Old
Scientists estimate that Lake Baikal is the oldest lake in the world, at 25 to 30 million years old—far older than most lakes, which have existed for only tens of thousands of years!
A Lake Like No Other!
Unlike most lakes that dry up or are filled with sediment, Baikal is located in a rift valley that is in a state of constant expansion as a result of tectonic activity.
Depth That Defies Limits!
With a depth of 1,642 metres (5,387 feet), Lake Baikal is also the world's oldest deep freshwater lake.
Crystal-Clear Waters!
Baikal's water is so clear and pure that on a sunny day you can see up to 40 metres (130 feet) deep!
A UNESCO World Heritage Site
Because of its age, biodiversity, and geology, Lake Baikal is a UNESCO-protected site since 1996.
The Baikal Threats
Pollution, global warming, and industrial development threaten this ancient lake. Save it now!
